The Day Everything Shifted: How I Discovered Keto and Changed My Health
I was out walking one afternoon, breathing in the fresh air, when YouTube started playing an episode of The Diary of a CEO on my phone. Steven Bartlett was interviewing a guest who was talking about the ketogenic diet — and something about the conversation immediately drew me in. It wasn’t the usual diet chatter. It was a complete rethink of how the body runs its energy systems.
He spoke about intermittent fasting, tapping into stored fat, and how most of us spend our entire lives burning sugar instead of fat simply because of how we eat. Then he said something that stuck with me: after about three days of fasting, the body enters ketosis — a metabolic state where you burn fat not because you’re restricting calories, but because you’ve switched your body onto a different fuel source altogether.
Two metabolic states, he said: sugar-burning and fat-burning. Modern diets keep us locked into the first. But after roughly 48 hours without food, the body flips its own internal switch and starts burning fat instead.
That was back in February 2024. I decided to give this whole thing a go — not as a quick fix, but as a new way of living. At the time, I weighed 80 kg. Six months later, I was 10 kg lighter and in the best shape I'd ever been.
But honestly? The physical change was just the beginning.
I became fascinated by the science behind it all. I devoured books, dug into research papers, and listened to endless hours of doctors and researchers explaining how ketosis works. Then I turned myself into a bit of an experiment.
I tried supplements, home blood-testing kits, two-week keto protocols, and every version of fasting I could find. I’ve done fasts longer than a week. I’ve gone on holiday, eaten anything and everything, and then tracked how quickly I could get back into fat-burning mode afterwards.
